Why Women Should Play Fantasy Football

June 05, 2026

Because the game isn’t just for the guys anymore—it’s for women, too.

If you’ve ever sat at a Sunday brunch and tuned out while your friends debated their fantasy football matchups—or watched your teen light up while explaining their team but felt unsure how to join in—you’re not alone. Fantasy football can feel like a world you weren’t invited into. But here’s the truth: the game has changed, and there’s never been a better time for women to join in. The area of fantasy football is evolving, with empowerment marketing and demographic shifts making it clear that women are a growing and influential group in this space.

Fantasy football isn’t about knowing every stat or watching all 17 hours of Sunday coverage. It’s about connection, strategy, and confidence—and women are showing up to play on all fronts. There are many reasons women are joining fantasy football, including the desire for social connection, the challenge of competition, and simply having fun. Women's participation in fantasy football is on the rise, reflecting a broader trend of women's increasing involvement in major sporting events and competitions. While fantasy football has traditionally been seen as a game for men, more women are now participating and changing the landscape. Whether you’ve been a lifelong football fan or are just now learning the difference between a running back and a wide receiver, fantasy football gives you a reason to tune in, speak up, and take part in the conversation. And trust me, once you start, it’s hard not to fall in love with the game. There are also many similarities in the motivations of women and men who play fantasy football, such as enjoying the competition and building community.

Introduction to Fantasy Football

Friends at a Packers Game

If you’ve ever wondered what all the fantasy football buzz is about, you’re not alone. Fantasy football is a fun online game where you get to pick your own team of NFL players and compete against others based on how those players perform each week in real games. Each football season, millions of people log in, set their lineups, and watch the points add up—making every week of the NFL season even more exciting.

What’s really nice is that women are making a big impact in fantasy football, now making up a large and growing number of players. Whether you’re a longtime football fan or just starting to get familiar with the game, there’s a lot to enjoy and a lot of ways to play.

Getting started is easier than you might think. You can join a league with friends, family, or even people you’ve never met. Each league has its own rules and scoring system, so it’s a good idea to do a little research before you pick your team. The goal is simple: find the best players, build a strong team, and score the most points each week. You’ll get to make transfers, try out different strategies, and see how your picks stack up against the competition.

Fantasy football fits any budget—some leagues are free, while others have a small entry fee and offer prizes for the winners. But the real reward is the fun you’ll have and the new things you’ll learn along the way. Many women say that playing fantasy football has helped them enjoy the game more, bond with friends and family, and even apply their strategy skills in a whole new way.

So if you’ve ever wanted to try something new this football season, fantasy football is a great way to start. With a little research and a lot of excitement, you could find yourself holding the trophy at the end of the season—or at least having a lot of fun along the way.

More Than Just a Game

Fantasy football is competitive, sure. But it’s also creative. You build a team, manage a roster, and make game-day decisions based on your gut, your research, and your evolving knowledge. You don’t have to know everything from the start—most people don’t! You learn as you go. Playing fantasy football can also enhance your enjoyment and engagement with NFL games and related activities. And the more you play, the more confident you become.

For women, especially, that confidence is powerful. Fantasy football gives you the language to join in sports conversations at work, at home, and yes, even at those family tailgates where everyone has an opinion about the Colts’ quarterback (guilty!).

My Fantasy Football Story

Bike to Colts camp with son

I didn’t grow up playing fantasy football. But as a Colts fan and mom to a football-loving son, I wanted in on the fun. I thought about how joining a league could help me connect with my son and learn more about the NFL. Eventually, I joined my first fantasy football league, excited to become part of the action. Over the years, it became our thing—we’ve biked 15 miles to training camp, gone to games together, and now we talk fantasy football several times a week.

But one of my favorite moments happened at a dinner where I didn’t know anyone. I ended up next to a mom and her teenage son. We started talking football, and minutes later, he was showing me his fantasy team on his phone. His mom was surprised—in a good way. It clicked for her that she was missing out on this conn

ection. I’ve seen it happen time and time again: fantasy football brings people together. I love to share my experiences and tips with other women and new players, helping them feel welcome and confident in the league.

This Is Your Invitation

You don’t have to play to win a trophy (though that’s fun, too). You play because it’s exciting. Because it connects you to your family, your coworkers, your friends. You play because it gives you something to look forward to each week and reminds you that you can learn something new, even in a space that once felt off-limits.

So if you’ve been waiting for the right time to join? This is it.

Our next post dives into what makes women-only fantasy leagues so special—highlighting how these leagues are a space for girls to manage teams, bond, and enjoy the game together—and why they just might be the perfect way to start your journey.
